SpaceX Just Flew a Falcon 9 Booster for a Record 37th Time… but the Rocket's Days Are Numbered
Yesterday, SpaceX flew Falcon 9 booster B1067 for the 37th time.
That's a record. No rocket stage has ever flown more.
B1067 first launched in June 2021. Five years and 37 trips to space later… it touched down on a drone ship in the Atlantic.
But here's what counts more than the record.
Elon Musk said last week on X that SpaceX will retire Falcon 9. And Falcon Heavy. Both programs, done.
Let me explain.
Once Starship flies "reliably several times per week," SpaceX will wind down Falcon. They'll move every engineer and every factory line to the bigger rocket. The end goal? Several Starship flights per day.
That's not a vague hope. That's a kill date.
And the clues are all around you. SpaceX just hit 100 Falcon 9 flights this year. But they're pulling Cape Canaveral crews off Falcon and onto Starship work. More and more Starlink runs now launch from Vandenberg — because Cape is clearing the deck.
So what does this mean for the rest of the launch market?
Every launch company on Earth priced its rocket against Falcon 9. Rocket Lab. ULA. Arianespace. They all signed contracts and raised cash based on what Falcon charges today.
Falcon won't be the benchmark much longer.
Starship doesn't just beat Falcon on price. It wrecks the math.
Falcon lifts 23 tons to low orbit. Starship lifts 100 to 150. Falcon charges around $74 million a flight. SpaceX wants Starship under $10 million — with five to seven times the cargo.
In other words, the rocket every rival measures itself against is about to give way to something far cheaper per kilogram.
Now, I know what you're thinking. "Starship hasn't reached orbit yet. Thirteen test flights. All suborbital."
Fair point. Flight 14 — the first full orbital try — is due within a month.
But SpaceX isn't saying Falcon dies tomorrow. They're saying it dies the moment Starship works. And SpaceX has spent two decades making things work.
In 2020, they flew Falcon 26 times. By 2025, they flew it 165 times. Six-fold growth in five years. If Starship follows the same ramp… the launch market as we know it won't last.
